Motorcycle Accident Sends 1 In Cardiac Arrest to Trauma Center

March the 20th, brought in more than just the first day of Spring, it brought about several tragic accidents in the Jacksonville area. In Mandarin, Station 51 was alerted by a passing motorist of an accident less than half a mile away from the station. As engine and rescue arrived on the scene a motocyclist was observed laying among debris between two trees. What crews saw next resulted in an immediate request for a full rescue assignment and a helicopter. The patient's legs were touching his shoulders all while being pinned down by the motorcylce atop him. As we removed the motorcycle from crushing him, the patient was noted to have no pulse nor sign of breathing. CPR efforts were began by Station 51's crew along with the aid of Rescue 21. The patients many fractures, and breaks were then stabalized while being prepared for transport to a landing zone being set up a few miles away in a nearby shopping center. The patient was then transported to the LZ where the awaiting LifeFlight helicopter airlifted the patient to Shands Trauma Center. The mid afternoon trauma red was 1 of three others in the Jacksonville area at around the same time. On the westside a pedestrian was hit by a vehicle, and in a neighboring county two motorcyclists were also coded.

Units on the scene were: Engine 51, 42, 21, Rescue 51, 21, 103, F3, Sf1, Tr10, and Life Flight
