I-295 Head-On MVA with Extrication & Trauma Alert x2

On August 27th, Engine and Rescue 51 were dispatched to a motor vehicle accident with injuries. As the JFRD crews neared the scene, dense smoke was seen in the area of the reported crash. On arrival, a Cadillac CTS and Suzuki Samurai were seen smoking with severe damage to the front ends of both, and 1 pt. was obviously trapped in the wreckage. After an extrication assignment and an air transport unit were requested, fire/rescue crews began extrication. As Northbound I-295 was shut down, the scene was prepared with Air Chisels, "jaws of life," spreaders, and other Hurst tools for the extrication. Crews from Engine 51, 42, and TL44 cut both doors from the badly trapped pt's. Suzuki Samurai, and began to flap the vehicle's roof foward. Because of the intense impact, the vehicle's were wedged together and had to be pulled by Rescue 51 in order to gain adequate access for the patients removal. After a 45 minute extrication the patient was freed and transferred to the crew of TraumaOne. He was then air-lifted to Shands Trauma Center, with multiple severe injuries, and in critical condition. 5 occupants traveling in the Cadillac also recieved injuries, 1 with broken femurs. 2 of the pt's. were transported to Shands Jacksonville via Rescue 42, while the remaining 3 were transported to other area hospitals. Responding units were on the scene for about two hours, from begining of extrication to scene and fuel leakage clean up.

During a mid-afternoon stormy Sunday, Station 51 having already experienced a very hectic day, responded to yet another medical run. When the engine cleared the intersection, a driver who had yielded to the unit, continued not noticing Rescue 51 had also approached. The driver collided into the driver-side of the rescue. The collision resulted in minor injuries to the engineer who was transported by another rescue unit. The engineer returned to duty later that same day.

Road Rage Dispute Ends in Auto Vs. Pedestrian Fatality

After a minor dispute among drivers on the Southside of Jaksonville, a major turn of tragic events ensued. What followed that afternoon claimed the life of one area man. As the two irrate drivers made their way home, one jestered a signal to the other. After the second driver arrived at the home of the first vehicle's driver, a heated arguement took place. After a passenger from the first vehicle went into the home, the second driver made an attempt to leave the area. The driver from the first auto exited his vehicle, and began to chase after the second driver. As the vehicle made its way past, the man then lounged at the car. The man was thrown to the ground where his head struck the concrete. Engine 44, and Rescue 51 first arrived to find massive bleeding from the unconcious pt's. ears and nose. A trauma alert was called, and TraumaOne was requested to airlift the pt. to Shands. Tower Ladder 44, landed the atu in a nearby lot where the pt. was transfered. The patient passed away the following morning at Shands, as a result to the major head trauma.
