Fatal 4 Vehicle Pile-Up Accident On Southside Blvd.

A four vehicle traffic accident on Jacksonville's southside resulted in the fatality of one female just leaving work, and a slew of twisted, mangled wreckage at the intersection of Southside Blvd. and Deer Creek Club Rd. Fire and Rescue crews were toned out to the traffic accident with one trapped around 3:15pm, sending crews rushing through the heavily traveled corador. First on scene, engine 44 reported one trauma alert patient that was heavily trapped due to the severity of the mva. A massive rear-end collision left a chain of vehicles littered across the roadway with several motorists gathered along the wreckage scene. The crash reportedly occured after traffic had stopped at a red light, and the driver of a Ford Expedition never slowed, plowing into a stopped Pontiac Grand Am. The force of the crash completely demolished the Grand Am, pushing the entire trunk and rear seats into the front driver and passenger compartment. The momentum then caused the Grand Am to continue, ricocheting into a Land Rover and GMC SUV. Moments after tower ladder 44's arrival a trauma red was called, and an air transport unit was dispatched to the scene. As extrication efforts began, access was made to the lone female driver, who was noted to have no resperations, organized rythmic heart activity, nor pulse. She was pronounced signal 7 on scene due to her injuries, vital signs, and mechanism of injury. Life flight was cancelled while crews continued the rapid extrication assignment. When she was freed, the victim's heart rhythm was classified as having p.e.a. (pulseless electrical activity). Paramedics on the scene made the decision to make an attempt to work her, amist her 10-15 minute "down time." Rescue crews fully packaged the patient and began a load and go status to Shands Jacksonville's Trauma Center, rather than await the re-dispatch of life flight and their arrival. She was taken by ground via rescue 42. At the hospital she was officially declared a fatality. There were no other motorists injured.
Crews assisting in the extrication include Engine 44, 54, 51, Tower Ladder 44, Tanker 44, Fire 3, Rescue 42, 28, 105, Safety 1, and Training 10.

Teen Rides Moped Into Parked SUV.... Results In Trauma Alert.

During the early afternoon hours, a 13 year old teen riding a moped in his apartment complex crashed into a parked Ford Explorer. The force of the crash caused the young man several traumatic injuries. Engine and rescue 51 were dispatched to the traffic accident with just a report of injuries. First on scene, rescue 51 made note of his several rather "major" injuries, called a trauma alert, and requested an air transport unit. Comunications, with the update dispatched tower ladder 44 to land the helicopter, engine 42 to assist on scene, and a district and rescue chief to supervise the rescue/ landing zone assignments. The patient was fully packaged, immobilized, large boar IV's started and oxygen administered. The patient was taken to the nearby LZ, where TraumaOne was awaiting to transport the patient to Shands Jacksonville in serious condition. The patient suffered a broken femur, tib/fib break of the leg, ulna/radius break, humerus break, scapula break, possible inclosed head injury, and multiple broken teeth. The patient was not wearing a helmet, however is expected to make a recovery after rehabilitation. Units on scene: Engine 51, 42, Rescue 51, 103, Fire 3, Tower Ladder 44, and TraumaOne.

Accident Results In Tractor Trailer Rollover

On January 17th, engine and rescue 51 were toned out to a traffic accident with possible injuries. On arrival of personnel, crews found a single tractor trailer rollover crash with one victim who was uninjuried. The overturned tractor had received moderate damage as it flipped, rupturing one of two side-saddle fuel tanks, spilling about 40 gallons of diesel onto the pavement. Crews used absorbent and sand; which was part of the trucks spilled load to help control the leak. The scene was cleared after about four hours, as bio was notified of the spill and a wrecker was called to right and remove the semi.

Fire and rescue crews responded to a motor vehicle accident with injuries, with the report that a driver had struck a building. When rescue crews arrived on the scene they found a vehicle had struck the car wash and then the corner of the gas station/ convienence store. The driver had minor injuries and complained of only lower lumbar and coccyx back pain. The lone driver was fully packaged and transported to a local emergency room for treatment and observation.
